How the Qipao Evolved

Qipao in Singapore has become a magical work of art for both the regular fashionista as well as the conservative woman. That’s what makes it different from the rest of traditional dresses. What Is It?

This is a dress with a slit skirt. It also comes with a high neck. It is a fit dress that is suitable for women of all age brackets, sizes, and cultures. This was originally worn by the old-time Manchus during the 16th century. They were known for these straight and loose dresses. These dresses represent their nomadic lifestyle. Han Tribes considered Manchus as Banner People which game way for the dress to be called qipao. Qipao literally means gowns that are worn by old banner people.

During the 19th Century

This was the beginning of the Xinhai Revolution. This time qipao was adopted as the traditional clothing of China. It was neatly tailored to suit different preferences and styles of those who wear it. The modern version of the qipao was designed in the 1900.

During the 1930s

At the beginning of the 1930s, qipao or the cheongsam became one of the prime national outfits of China. This became really famous among the young women in China. This was worn by women no matter what age or social status they may be. Many workers and celebrities started to don in the qipao. Western influences on fashion also started to creep in, changing the qipao from closed to revealing and from loose to tight fitting.

Today’s Qipao

These days, the qipao is already an occasional dress. This dress is meant for special occasions like weddings, Chinese New Year, weddings, and beauty pageants. It may also be used as uniforms I  authentic Chinese restaurants and in some schools.
